A burglar has "severely damaged" an urn containing the ashes of Sigmund Freud during an attempted theft at a London crematorium.
The Metropolitan Police said the burglar tried to steal the ashes of the psychoanalyst on December 31 or January 1 from Golders Green Crematorium.
Sigmund Freud died in 1939The 2,300-year-old Greek urn also holds the remains of Freud's wife Martha.
Detective Constable Daniel Candler said the attempted theft was "a despicable act by a callous thief".
He told the Ham & High newspaper: "Even leaving aside the financial value of the irreplaceable urn and the historical significance of to whom it related, the fact that someone set out to take an object knowing it contained the last remains of a person defies belief.
"I urge anyone who knows the perpetrator to contact me or Crimestoppers."
The father of psychoanalysis moved to Britain from Nazi-controlled Austria in 1938. He died in London in September 1939.
Golders Green Crematorium has seen the funerals of many British celebrities, including Dracula novelist Bram Stoker, comedian Peter Sellers and singer Amy Winehouse.
The crematorium said the urn had been moved to a secure location and security was being reviewed.
