Star Wars fans waiting for Episode VII, the next of three planned sequels in the franchise, are going to be treated to some stand-alone movies as well.
Disney, which bought Lucasfilm last year for more than $4bn (£2.55bn), plans to make spin-off movies based on some of the characters in the Star Wars universe.
CEO Bob Iger told CNBC the rumours about the Star Wars stand-alones were true and Disney was "working on a few" titles that were not part of the overall saga.
He said Episodes VII, VIII and IX would be made over a roughly six-year period starting in 2015, and the stand-alones would be created at the same time.
Mr Iger said British-born screenwriter Simon Kinberg and American writer/producer Larry Kasdan were involved.
Mr Kasdan, 64, wrote Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi, and will write and produce Episode VIII and Episode IX.
Mr Kinberg, 39, whose past credits include Mr & Mrs Smith and X-Men: The Last Stand, will be co-writing Episodes VIII and IX with Mr Kasdan.
Both men will be working on the standalone movies as well as the series titles.
Stormtroopers on the march at a Star Wars convention in Tokyo Mr Iger said: "We have opportunity and good ideas out there, and creators who are really interested in flushing out those ideas, and we're going for it.
"(It) will be great because there will be more Star Wars basically released in the atmosphere, so to speak, and that's new and fresh.
"But I'm going to leave it to (Lucasfilm president) Kathy (Kennedy) and the Lucas team to provide all the details when ready."
Social media was alight with suggestions as to which characters might get their own movies.
Boba Fett proved a popular choice with many people, while celebrity blogger Perez Hilton's preferred character was Yoda.
Disney confirmed last month that Star Trek director JJ Abrams will direct the seventh instalment of the Star Wars saga.
The last Star Wars trilogy, a prequel to the original films, was released between 1999 and 2005.
