Iraqi forces have entered Saddam Hussein's home town of Tikrit as part of an offensive against Islamic State militants.
A major general told the AFP news agency: "We were able to control Tikrit military hospital, which is close to the centre of the city.
"But we are engaging in a very delicate battle because we are not facing fighters on the ground, we are facing booby-trapped terrain and sniper fire. Our movement is slow."
Tikrit is one of the largest cities held by the jihadi group after it invaded Iraq from Syria last year.
The city lies on the strategically important road between Baghdad and Mosul, Iraq's second largest city and also under IS control.
