Social-media users have responded to the attack on the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo with the hashtag #jesuischarlie in an outpouring of solidarity with the victims.
Users on Twitter have replaced their profile avatars with a white-on-black image of the phrase - which translates as "I am Charlie" in English - in sympathy with those killed.
User @LibyaLiberty tweeted: "As a Muslim, I absolutely refuse to apologise for this terrorist act. But as a Muslim,I demand justice for the victims& say: #JeSuisCharlie".
Guy Verhofstadt, the President of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe tweeted: "A tragic day for the freedom of speech #jesuischarlie."
The Twitter account for the US Embassy in France also changed its avatar picture. It has tweeted there are no plans to close the the embassy in Paris or other diplomatic facilities in France, despite misleading reports.
At least 12 people have been shot dead and four others critically injured after three masked gunmen armed with Kalashnikov rifles stormed the offices of the satirical magazine in Paris.
A hostage siege in Sydney in December, where a lone gunmen took over a café before it was stormed by armed police, also sparked an outpouring of solidarity on social media with the hashtag #illridewithyou trending worldwide.
Amid uncertainty about the hostage-taker's motives and fears of reprisals a Twitter user started the hashtag to reassure Muslims who might feel threatened on public transport in the coming days.
@SirTessa wrote: "If you reg take the #373 bus b/w Coogee/MartinPl, wear religious attire, & don't feel safe alone: I'll ride with you. @ me for schedule."
Twitter users responded to this in their thousands with many offering to accompany people in Sydney and other Australian cities.
